My Silent Retreat Experience

Recently I went on a three-day silent retreat.  I was actually able to do it from my home, although many people do attend organized retreats away.

I was very nervous prior to going on the retreat.  I was nervous because I did not think I would be able to let go of the phone or computer, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

My day consisted of waking up around 9:30am and having breakfast for about 45 minutes to one hour.  I then meditated for about 90 minutes.  I really did not think I could meditate for that long, but because there was nothing pressing and I knew that I had all this time that was allotted for the experience, I was able to let go quite easily and I just went with the flow.  It was amazing.  What a connection!  I was compelled to write a poem -  I have not written a poem since grade school.  The poem was guided by the “Great Soul”.

I then would go for a walk.  I took my time.  I actually strolled.  At one point, a robin suddenly hopped in front of me.  I stopped.  When it hopped I stepped in time with the it.  It turned around and tweeted at me.  It was aware I was there.  It slowly hopped into someone’s garden and I moved on with my walking.  I not only stopped to smell the roses, but I actually felt them.

I also did some yin yoga and embraced each movement slowly.  When I ate lunch and dinner I took my time and acknowledged and thought of where the food I was eating came from.  I journaled and I drew.  Bedtime was either 9:30pm or 10:00pm with a short time for reading.

I felt an incredibly deep connection to the spiritual world.  It was an uninterrupted connection.  I recommend a silent retreat for everyone.  I have decided to make this a practice in my life at least once or twice a year.  It is needed and it is nurturing.  As someone explained to me, “Spouses and partners take time away together, it is important we do the same with Divine.”  It is not about recharging your battery it is about recharging and feeling the soul connection!

Even now, if I begin to feel any sort of stress or doubt my mind turns back to those three days and I instantly feel that sense of deep peace and silence I felt during those three days.  A silent retreat is grounding and provides a deep awareness.

If you are able give it a try!  Your soul will love it.
